COMPOSITION OF THE ESSENTIAL OILS IN CALENDULA SUFFRUTICOSA (ASTERACEAE) FROM SICILY
2016
The genus Calendula L. (Calenduleae Cass., Asteraceae) includes several species having medicinal properties. Pharmacological studies reveal, for instance, that C. officinalis L. exhibits antibacterial, antiviral, antinflammatory, antitumor and antioxidant properties; C. arvensis L. has antibacterial, antinflammatory, antimutagenic and haemolytic activities; C. suffruticosa Vahl has antimicrobial activity, especially against pathogenic microorganisms as Pseudomonas syringae Van Hall, Pseudomonas fluorescens (Flügge) Migula, Xanthomonas campestris (Pammel) Dowson and Agrobacterium tumefaciens Smith & Townsend. Nevertheless, despite a long tradition of use of the above species, and others,…
Phytosociological study of the acidophilous deciduous oak woods with Ilex aquifolium of Sicily
2009
We present here a phytosociological study with ecological considerations of some formations with a prevalence of Quercus pubescens s.l. and Ilex aquifolium that occur on siliceous ground in the Madonie and Peloritani Mountains of Sicily. On the basis of this study, these formations have been attributed to two new associations: Ilici aquifolii-Quercetum leptobalani and Conopodio capillifolii-Quercetum congestae, within the order Quercetalia pubescenti- petraeae, which is already represented by other associations in Sicily.
Geochronology of the medium-high-grade units of the Peloritani Mts., Sicily.
2003
The Peloritani Mountains are a fragment of an orogen variably attributed to the Alpine or Hercynian orogeny. On the basis of Ar-39-Ar-40, U-Pb and Rb-Sr dating, the main metamorphism of the two medium-high grade metamorphic units, the Mela and Aspromonte Units, and most of the thrusting responsible for stacking the orogenic edifice are seen to be Hercynian. The main thrusting of the Aspromonte Unit over the lower grade units took place at 301+/-2 Ma. Brittle deformation during Tertiary reactivation of Hercynian thrust planes did not generate any rejuvenation of white micas in the studied sector. Our dataset shows a great complexity and we propose to unravel it by considering different level…
Renaissance Itineraries between Nebrodi and Peloritani: Architectural Heritage, History and Technology
2022
Within the general framework of a research Project of Relevant National Interest (PRIN 2017), entitled “The Renaissance in Southern Italy and the Islands: Cultural Heritage and Technology”, the research unit based at Palermo University focused on the inner area that includes Nebrodi and Peloritani mountains, as a quite unexplored and stimulating environment in the specific field of investigation. The scientific relevance of the investigation on “Renaissance itineraries” in this territory, for a deeper understanding of the overall cultural phenomenon in the island, guided this choice, as well as the opportunity to create cultural networks among small local communities, encouraging their sust…

Hieracium hypochoeroides subsp. montis-scuderii (Asteraceae), a new endemic subspecies from Sicily (Italy)
2013
Hieracium hypochoeroides subsp. montis-scuderii, a new subspecies endemic to Sicily, is described and illustrated. It is only known from the carbonate cliffs of Monte Scuderi (Peloritani Mountains, NE-Sicily). Informations on its ecology and taxonomic relationships are provided.
